New Zealand 70th Commemoration
May the 18th 2014 marked the 60th Anniversary of the liberation of Cassino. In recognition, New Zealand veterans travelled to Cassino to commemorate this anniversary. The commemorations were attended by the New Zealand Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae and Prince Harry. Students from a New Zealand secondary school which models itself on the values of the Maori Battalion also attended the commemorations and performed a Haka as part of this service. The coverage of these commemorations showed a number of moving tributes to the veterans and the reverence held by the Italian people for the New Zealand troops.
Also commemorating this anniversary, a number of documentaries were played on New Zealand TV and National Radio. Collectively these events reinforce the importance of the Monte Cassino Battle for New Zealand's identity even today, 60 years on.
